My father is really into Louis L’Amour and just about any other western, but this Christmas I want to try something a little different. I’ve only dabbled in this genre, so any research given would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Thot I’d read them all, but somehow missed that one. Appreciate the steer.
I have read most of the westerns over the decades. Love L’ Amour. Just read one that come out a few months ago. #1 best seller and won Best Western and Runner up Best Romance from USA Books. It is called Threads West. First of a six book series. Thought it was one of the best I have ever read. Ranks right up there with Lonesome Dove and Centennial. Different, too, not the usual Western story. Can get it on Barnes and Noble web site. Starts in Europe in 1855. I highly reccomend it.
Best source I know is here: http://westernfiction.com/bookstore.html
Stephen Ambrose has a few titles that might interest your father. Ambrose writes very readable history, I really enjoy his books and learn a lot from them too. The titles that came to mind for your question include Undaunted Courage, about the Lewis & Clark expedition, Crazy Horse & Custer, which is self-explanatory and Nothing Like It In The World, about the building of the transcontinental railroad. Here’s the Amazon link to his books:
